Humus is the thin, fertile layer of soil that we all live off, but which is shrinking worldwide. Enriched with biomass charcoal, humus can bind large amounts of carbon dioxide and become a carbon sink. Under the name terra preta, the anthropogenic charcoal humus is also known to be a sustainable, highly fertile soil.
Inspired by the current scientific research in this field, I developed a material made of cellulose and charcoal and modeled sculptures with it. These compostable objects take the shape of plant seeds and pollen grains. They are then buried in the humus layer, of a garden for instance, during an artistic action with the participation of the public, and in this way handed over to the earth. The art burial unites those present for a moment; it becomes a ritual of hope for the soil’s ability to bind CO2.

Objekte und Kunstaktion. Pflanzenkohle, Zellulose, Reismehl, Gartenwerkzeug, Wasser.

Humus ist die dünne fruchtbare Erdschicht, von der wir alle leben, die aber weltweit rückgängig ist. Humus kann, mit Biomasse-Kohle angereichert, große Kohlendioxid Mengen binden und zur Kohlenstoff-Senke werden. Unter dem Namen terra preta ist der Kohle-Humus außerdem als nachhaltig sehr fruchtbarer Boden bekannt.
Von der aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Forschung in diesem Bereich angeregt, habe ich ein Material aus Zellulose und Pflanzenkohle entwickelt, und daraus Skulpturen gefertigt. Diese kompostierbaren Objekte nehmen die Form von Pflanzensamen und Pollenkörnern an. Sie werden während einer Kunstaktion mit Teilnahme des Publikums in die Humus-Schicht (z. B. eines Gartens) begraben und somit der Erde übergeben. Die Kunst-Beerdigung verbindet die Anwesenden für einen Moment miteinander; sie wird zu einem Ritual der Hoffnung für die CO2-Bindefähigkeit des Bodens.
