Waldbestattung started with a bag of barbecue charcoal bought at a discounter, the origin of the fuel not being indicated. Recent studies have shown that 40 % of barbecue charcoal marketed in Germany comes from tropical wood, most of which is illegally felled.
The artistic action diverts the fuel from its function, treating the calcined forest as a being worthy of burial, inspired in this by the animism of the peoples of Amazonia. The briquettes are first crushed to take the natural appearance of funeral ashes. These are then placed in paper urns made according to an origami model. The urns are buried in a vegetable garden, following the agricultural practice of the Amazonian peoples, who have been using charcoal for thousands of years to create terra preta, an exceptionally fertile anthropogenic soil.
 

 
In its successive phases, the action takes on a ritual dimension, associating respect and fertility of nature. It is less a question of calling attention to the felling of the primary forest for barbecues than of restoring to this material the identity and use that it has always had in the region of the world it comes from.
Waldbestattung also refers to a rediscovered technology: adding biomass charcoal to the soil is now being tested as a promising method of sequestering carbon dioxide to combat both global warming and the loss of arable surfaces.

Waldbestattung begann mit einem beim Discounter gekauften Sack Grillkohle. Die Herkunft der Holzkohle war nicht angegeben. Neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass 40 % der in Deutschland vermarkteten Grillkohle aus Tropenholz stammt. Dieses wird größtenteils illegal gefällt.
Die künstlerische Aktion entzieht dem Brennstoff seine Funktion, indem sie den verkohlten Wald als ein bestattungswürdiges Wesen behandelt, inspiriert durch den Animismus der Völker Amazoniens. Die Briketts werden zunächst zerkleinert, um ein natürliches Aussehen von Begräbnisasche anzunehmen. Diese werden dann in Papierurnen gelegt, die nach einem Origami-Modell hergestellt wurden. Die Urnen werden in einem Gemüsegarten begraben, in Anlehnung an die landwirtschaftliche Praxis der Völker Amazoniens, die seit Jahrtausenden Holzkohle verwenden, um terra preta, einen außergewöhnlich fruchtbaren anthropogenen Boden, zu schaffen.
In ihren aufeinanderfolgenden Phasen nimmt die Aktion eine rituelle Dimension an, sie verbindet Respekt und Fruchtbarkeit der Natur miteinander. Es geht weniger darum, die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Abholzung des Primärwaldes für unser Grillvergnügen zu lenken, als vielmehr diesem Material die Identität und die Nutzung zurückzugeben, die es in seiner Ursprungsregion schon immer hatte.
Waldbestattung bezieht sich außerdem auf eine wiederentdeckte Technologie: Die Zugabe von Biomasse-Holzkohle in den Boden wird jetzt als vielversprechende Methode zur Sequestrierung von Kohlendioxid getestet, um sowohl die globale Erderwärmung als auch den Verlust von Ackerflächen zu bekämpfen.

Waldbestattung a pour origine un sac de charbon de bois pour barbecue acheté chez un discounter, dont l’origine du combustible n’est pas indiquée. Des études ont montré ces dernières années que 40 % du charbon pour grill commercialisé en Allemagne provient de bois tropical, la plupart illégalement abattu.
L’action artistique détourne le combustible de sa fonction, traitant la forêt calcinée comme un être digne de sépulture, s’inspirant en cela de l’animisme des peuples d’Amazonie. Les briquettes sont tout d’abord concassées pour prendre l’aspect naturel de cendres funéraires. Celles-ci sont ensuite placées dans des urnes de papier réalisées selon un modèle d’origami. Les urnes sont enterrées dans un jardin potager, suivant la technique agricole des peuples amazoniens, qui utilisent depuis des millénaires le charbon de bois pour créer la terra preta, un sol anthropogénique très fertile.
Dans ses phases successives, l’action prend une dimension rituelle, associant respect et fécondité de la nature. Il s’agit moins de pointer du doigt l’abattage de la forêt primaire pour les grillades que de redonner à ce matériau l’identité et l’usage qu’il a toujours eu dans la région du monde d’où il provient.
Waldbestattung fait par ailleurs référence à la redécouverte d’une technique: mêler du charbon de biomasse au sol est aujourd’hui expérimenté comme méthode prometteuse de séquestration du CO2 pour lutter à la fois contre le réchauffement climatique et la perte des surfaces arables.
